The crust of the Earth is in constant motion. The Earth's plates sometimes lock together and energy builds up in the rocks. When enough energy has built up, the rocks will suddenly break apart forming seismic waves that travel through the Earth. These waves are what we feel during an earthquake. Students also learn how tsunamis form and why 80% of them occur in the Pacific Ocean. Additional hands-on activities on earthquakes are available in our ACTIVITY books.
