Fault Blocks

Activity 6

 Introduction
This is a fun way for you to understand the different ways that blocks of land move due to stress. You can use recycled Styrofoam packaging for this activity. A Styrofoam cutter found in craft stores is helpful for this project.

Fault blocks

Materials

  •   Styrofoam block 3 ½ X 4 X 2 inches (available in craft stores)

  •   Green, yellow and brown acrylic paint bottles ( do not use spray cans)

  •    Paint brush

Directions

  1. Cut the Styrofoam block at an angle to show a fault plane.
  2. Paint the two pieces of Styrofoam to show rock layers.
  3. Move the fault blocks up and down to show normal and reverse faults.
  4. Move the block sideways to show a strike slip fault.
