Fault Blocks
Activity 6
Introduction
This is a fun way for you to understand the different ways that
blocks of land move due to stress. You can use recycled Styrofoam packaging for
this activity. A Styrofoam cutter found in craft stores is helpful for this
project.

Materials
-
Styrofoam block 3 ½ X 4 X 2 inches (available in
craft stores)
-
Green, yellow and brown acrylic paint bottles (
do not use spray cans)
-
Paint
brush
Directions
- Cut the Styrofoam block at an angle
to show a fault plane.
- Paint the two pieces of Styrofoam
to show rock layers.
- Move the fault blocks up and down
to show normal and reverse faults.
- Move the block sideways to show a
strike slip fault.
