Creating Breccia
Activity 5
Background
information
You have learned in this lesson that conglomerates and
breccia contain both large and small rock fragments cemented together to form a
rock. In this activity, you will be making breccia using pebbles, rock chips and
sand.

Materials

Pebbles with angular surfaces
-
Rock chips (small broken rock
fragments)
-
Sand
-
White school glue
-
Lid to whipped topping container

Step
1 Setting up and conducting the activity
- Collect a variety of pebbles, small
rock chips and sand.
- Decide how you are going to place
the stones in your container lid.
- Cover the empty lid with enough
glue so that the rocks are glued together.
- Fill in between the spaces of the
rocks with rock chips and sand.
- Add more glue if necessary to so
that all the rocks are glued firmly together.
- After the glue dries, you can use
your breccia for a trivet.
Step
2 Recording the activity
- After creating your breccia, it is
time to record information about the activity.
- Write the title and date of the
activity on a sheet of notebook paper.
- List the materials used in the
experiment.
- Write the steps you followed
completing the activity.
- Briefly write about your
observations and conclusions.
