Pressing Layers

Activity 13

Notes on the activity (Mini-lesson)

Rivers carry sand and silt into the ocean basins around the world. The sediment forms layers on the ocean floor. Over time the layers increase in depth. Some of the layers in the ocean are over 30 km deep. In this activity, students will be compressing bread to see how the sediments in the ocean compress as layers form on top. (Please note this is the mini-lesson for PreK-2nd grade students that the teacher introduces at the beginning of the lesson. When the activity is completed the teacher asks the students what happens to layers in the ocean when new layers form on top of the old sediment.)
